Dr. Piou received a team award from P.K. Keen, Lieutenant General U.S. Army Commander, for his contribution to the Operation JTF-HAITI J-9 during the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

Jean-Eugène Piou studied mathematics and engineering at the City University of New York. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the City University of New York, in 1993.  During his graduate study, his research areas included controller design for autopilots and eigenstructure assignment for aircrafts and space vehicles; he has many publications in those fields.

Upon graduation, he held visiting professorship at the City University of New York, and assistant professorship at the State University of New York at Binghamton, and he continued to make significant contributions to the field of eigenstructure assignment for flight control. Dr. Piou is known in the control system community both in the US and abroad for his contribution to eigenstructure assignment that uses multi-rate and delta operator systems to achieve desired eigenvalue and eigenvector entries that satisfy design flight control specifications for both continuous and discrete time systems.

In 1995, Dr. Piou joined Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he is a research scientist.  During his first fifteen years at MIT, he worked on many projects where he developed advanced multi-dimensional flight dynamic techniques to track space vehicles, and advanced signal processing techniques to characterize, image and identify space objects. For the past ten years, Dr. Piou conducted multi-disciplinary research involving automatic control theory, signal processing, spectral estimation and imaging techniques.

He used his knowledge in control theory to develop novel multi-dimensional state-space techniques that dramatically improve the image resolution of space, maritime and land vehicles generated from data collected by wideband radars. Dr. Piou has published many technical reports, journal articles and conference papers in the fields of signal processing, spectral estimation, sensor fusion and imaging. He is many times cited for his contributions to control theory, signal and image processing, spectral estimation and data fusion.

Dr. Piou is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 2006 and a senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) since 1998. He is a member of the doctoral examination committee and a member of the review board of accreditation committee of the electrical engineering department of the City University of New York. He is actively involved in the technical committee of the International Conference on Information Fusion of the IEEE, since 2010. He continuously reviews papers for the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, Automatic Control, Antennas and Propagation, and Remote Sensing, since 1997. He serves occasionally as a reviewer for the AIAA Journal of Guidance Control and Dynamics, and Automatica, since 1994.  He is Professeur Associé at ISTEAH.
